Shakespeare... WhoopdeeDoo

9th Grade: What comes to your mind when you hear the words, "Now we're going to read Shakespeare!" Do you cringe in fear? Do you giggle with glee? What past experiences have you had with Shakespeare to make you react the way you do?

When I hear 'we are going to read Shakespeare', I cannot honestly say my reaction is a joyful one. Good for Shakespeare and all, but I cant understand a word he says! I know that he's supposed to be such a great playwright and his works are masterpieces, but I would rather read something useful and entertaining. What's the point of reading a long boring passage when that time could be better spent reading something exciting. And I'm sure his work is exciting. Although it would appeal to a larger audience if it could be understood and make sence.

In the past I have read and performed a few of Shakespeare's plays in my drama classes. I did not enjoy that little unit of class. Its really hard to act out a character that speaks in such a unfamiliar way.

Another reasoning for my unpassionate responce to Shakespear is he seemed so... strange. I mean, he wor a tutu around his neck! Someone who does that must have someone seriously wrong with him. Thats all thank you.
